BASINGSTOKE Hockey Club Ladies moved up second in South Division Two after a 6-2 win over visiting Banbury.

Against the run of play Basingstoke captain Catriona Bausor stole the ball from the central defender and fired in from the top of the circle.

The home side doubled their advantage within two minutes thanks to Lisa Scarborough.

The visitors regained their composure and started to apply the pressure once again, with an attack down the right resulting in them getting a goal back.

Basingstoke were determined that this would be their day, and the team re-grouped and set about the task of turning the tide once more.

A wonderful display of closing down space and denying the opposition an easy pass was shown by the Basingstoke forwards and midfield, with Roxy O'Dea leading from the front.

The Banbury defence were in shock and couldn't relieve the pressure applied by the home team, and the third goal was calmly finished with a reverse stick shot by Fiona Parker to go into half time 3-1 up.

In the second half, Banbury were throwing everything at the Basingstoke defence, but again a team effort to hold them out and a good defensive short corner performance once again stood up to the test.

And the same as the first half, captain Bausor opened the scoring to get the home side back in the driving seat.

A short corner was then won and a brave Banbury save on the line resulted in a penalty stroke and without hesitation, captain and player of the match Bausor stepped forward to convert for her hat-trick and put the game beyond Banbury.

Banbury showed why they are doing so well in the league and continued to apply pressure on the Basingstoke defence, scoring a controversial high shot from a short corner.

Basingstoke reacted in the normal way and scored again with two minutes to go.

The ball was worked from the re-start down the right with a combination of short sharp passes.

A fantastic overlapping run by Mel Trevaskis who crossed the ball to Jo Bowden who calmly eliminated her defender and with a thumping shot scored the final goal of the game.

Next, the men’s first team welcomed Reigate to Down Grange for a thrilling 6-4 win.

The game started quickly with Dean Record breaking through Reigate’s midfield, passing the ball to Paul Dowers who finished smartly on his reverse at the near post.

Basingstoke carried on the pressure with all forwards combining well, and Record fed Grant Rouse from the baseline, who had time to settle himself and finish smartly with a flick high into the net.

Basingstoke had plenty more chances but couldn’t capitalise on all of them, until Rouse smashed a loose ball through the goalkeeper.

Reigate got a goal back just before half time from a short corner, with a good initial save from ‘keeper Adam Smith, but the ball was still loose for a Reigate striker to convert.

The half time message was clear, at 3-1 the game is not done and the next goal is key. Unfortunately, Basingstoke all of sudden were unsure in possession, passes going astray and gaps appeared in the press, and Reigate capitalised and got an early goal to bring the game back to 3-2.

Basingstoke responded well with some sustained pressure, with captain Andy Preston pushing up from centre back to crash a ball into the circle for Record to deflect past the keeper.

The next goal game from a break down the left, with Dave Stones feeding Ben Jubin who drew the keeper and slid in Record for a tap in.

However, Reigate fought back and won a penalty stroke, but put it wide. Reigate continued to press and won a short corner with four minutes to go, and converted with a well worked routine.

Basingstoke then put the game out of reach, with Record looking for his hat-trick but Todd Hutcheson converting. Reigate got another with a minute to go, finishing low past the Basingstoke goalkeeper to make it 6-4 final score.

The men’s second team travelled to Gosport, looking to get their season back on track and climb the Hants Division Two table, and came back 6-1 victors.

Basingstoke came out of the blocks firing on all cylinders; dominated possession and for 15 mins kept Gosport camped in their own half.

Ben Shaughnessy was the first to capitalise on the pressure, a loose pass from the Gosport centre back allowed Shaughnessy to round the last defender, followed by the keeper for the simplest of tap ins.

Gosport were having more of the ball but the midfield trio of Alex Miller, Jeremy Smith and Mark Easto were dealing with everything, with the defence mopping up anything that did get through.

Basingstoke's second came from great work in the wide channels, with James finding Jacques Lourens who calmly drifted to the top of the D and fed Shaughnessy to finish well on his reverse.

The home side continued to dominate and got a third through Josh Weir, before Gosport clawed one back through a short corner.

Basingstoke went in 4-1 up at half time through a penalty stroke, won and converted by Shaughnessy.

Gosport came out stronger in the second half, but the men persevered and were soon rewarded for their hard work when Ben Blackmore got in on the action with a penalty spot slap off a short corner. Basingstoke then scored their 6th with a few minutes to go, thanks to a far post tap in from Easto.

Finally, the thirds beat Chichester 4-1 at home, with a superb team effort and a hat-trick from Clinton Douglass to keep his run of form going strong, and another from Phil Stewart.
