THE Hampshire Junior Chess Congress attracted a large entry of 70 youngsters and Basingstoke Junior Chess players all did well.
Daniel Shek stormed to the under-eight section first prize with a maximum score of 6/6.
Daniel Yu competed in the under-10 competition and held his own against the stronger players finishing second with 5/6.
Other prize winners were the rapidly improving Peter Bulgakov (4/6) in the under-eight competition. Savindu Sapumanage (3/5) in a very strong under-12 section and playing in his first congress.
The chess season has now restarted and in the strong Berkshire League Division One, Basingstoke won 3½-2½ at Newbury A.
This was thanks to wins from David Graham, Roy Ashmore and John Shaddick plus a draw from Paul Hackman. In the Southampton League Division Three, Basingstoke A held the higher graded Winchester A side to a 2½-2½ draw.
There were wins from Graham and Philip Ware plus a draw from Paul Vanlint.
The next scheduled Family Chess Day is at the Discovery Centre/Library on Saturday, October 22 between 10am and 1pm.
