CALLING anyone who would like to learn how to play chess then come to the Basingstoke Discovery Centre/Library on Tuesday.

They are holding a family day for chess which starts at 10am and finishes at 1pm.

Members of the Basingstoke Chess Club will be present and pleased to help any players from beginners right up to county standard.

l The British Chess Championships were held for the first time at Bournemouth and attracted large entries in the various competitions.

Basingstoke Chess Club recorded a significant success with club President John Shaddick finishing joint first in the British under 140 championship.

Shaddick won his first three games and was then held to a draw in the fourth outing.

In the last round of games, he was paired with Richard Ursall of Highcliffe, who had won all his previous four games.

However good play with the white pieces saw the Basingstoke player win and claim joint first prize with Malcolm Roberts of Holmes Chapel.

Both players finished the five game ever with 4 ½ points.

l Both the Basingstoke junior qualifiers did well in the Giga-finals held at Reading.

Daniel Yu scored five out of six and earned his place in the Tera Finals to be held in Loughborough later in this month.

Daniel Shek also did well at under seven level scoring 4 ½ out of a possible six and secured a plate award position.
