THREE members of the same family from Old Basing enjoyed success, as part of the Great Britain Biathle team at the European Championships in Portugal.

Single-mum Cat Coveney (47) and her two sons Cameron Coveney (12) and Charlie Coveney (9) all qualified for the team earlier this year and did not disappoint.

The youngest member of the trio Charlie came second in the under-10 final and was only pipped for gold as the winner was quicker in transition in the event.

The St Mary’s Junior School pupil also won a gold medal as part of the victorious British team.

In the under-15 event, Cameron was up against competitors two years old and came a very creditable eighth. He sadly missed out on a team medal as the Costello pupil was the fourth Brit home.

The pressure was then on mum Cat in the Masters category, which included a 1,200 metres run, 100 metres swim and another 1,200 metres swim.

She delivered by winning a bronze medal and also won a team gold.

Talking about the experience Cat Coveney said: “I am so proud of my sons and it was such a great event to go. There was great camaraderie and sportsmanship within the GB team which was very heart warming. There was a really nice gala dinner at the end of the event and due to the schedule we were all able to watch each other which was nice.”

The trio are all members of the Wessex Wyverns based at the Cranbourne Business and Enterprise College, as well as Basingstoke and Mid Hants Athletic Club and Basingstoke Bluefins.
