THE annual Basingstoke Sports Trust badminton competition again proved a great success as four colleges did battle battled it out for honours at Basingstoke Sports Centre.

The event sponsored by Cllr Dan Putty saw players from Queen Mary’s College, Peter Symonds College, Sparsholt College, Highbury College and East College take part.

Players were The event started with the players separated into three pools and from this players then went on to the cup competition or the plate competition.

Pool A was won by Eastleigh’s Ryan May with four straight wins, while QMC’s Shraven Gurung came fifth in the group. Pool B was a lot closer as local player Jordan Coombs finished joint top with three wins along with winner Niamh Maughen-Otten from Highbury and Eastleigh’s Curtis May. Pool C, like Pool A, was won with a perfect record by Sparsholt’s Matt Hawkings, while QMC’s Lewis Butcher came fourth.

In the cup competition, Coombs was the only Basingstoke qualifier and finished sixth overall with two wins from his six games as he defeated Ryan May 15-9 and Maughen-Otten 15-7. The trophy was won by Hawkings with six straight wins and Ryan May was second.

In the Plate competition the QMC’s Butcher came third with five wins from his seven games, these wereagainst Hollis Chan (15-7), Asher Rayer (18-16), Abby O’Donnell (15-6), and Dan Simpson (15-12) and QMC teammate Gunrung (15-9).

Gunrung won two of his seven games – against , as he beat Hollis Chan (15-11) and Abby O’Donnell (17-15). The plate competition was won by Highbury’s Matej Matuscak with seven straight wins.
