BISHOP Challoner schoolboy and former Basingstoke Blizzards player Ethan Wyatt has been selected by Basketball England to represent the South in a national tournament in Sheffield next month.

After eight hours of intensive trials under the critical gaze of head coach and former Argentinian international player Diego Maggi, the squad of 12 under-13 boys was selected from boys across Hampshire, Berkshire, Wiltshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.

Wyatt (12) who lives in Basingstoke, now plays for Reading Rockets.

This caps a successful season for him as he helped the Rockets to second spot in the Solent League.

The Reading team finished their campaign with a very impressive record of 12 wins from 14 games.

The team also won three winners medals at the Monthly Hoop Dreams tournament organised by Surrey Heat.

Wyatt, also starred for the Solent League All Star team at Swansea University in March. There he helped the league team to victory against the Wales under-12 national team.

Marcel Mavronicholas, general manager at Basingstoke Blizzards and Ethan’s former coach said: “Ethan has done really well to get to this stage and it is a testament to his willingness to learn and train hard.

“As a Rockets' satellite club we hope to keep developing youngsters to get them to this stage and beyond.”

Basingstoke Blizzards run mixed teams at under-12, under-14 and under-16 level as well as two men’s teams.
