BASINGSTOKE Hockey players again excelled at the WGMA Veterans Hockey World Cup Following on from their 2014 success in The Hague, Gavin Stones, Richard Slator and Geoff Lucas travelled to Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia to participate in the 2016 event.

Stones playing for the England LX Reds Over 60s team and came home with another gold, after the team beat Southern Cross (Australia) 4-0 in the final of the Trophy competition, whilst Slater and Lucas, playing for England Over 65s and won silver in the cup competition, narrowly losing to Australia 1-0 in a fiercely contested match.

Another Basingstoke Hockey Club member Peter Cowen playing for Wales 0ver 60s who despite having the highest goal scorer of the competition in their team, ended up in 10th place.

As well as the players, Basingstoke also supplied an umpire for the event in Roy Woolley.

All of them will now hope to be selected for the next World Cup in two years time in Barcelona.
