BASINGSTOKE Su-Ha-Ri Karate School fighters returned with a fist full of medals from the WIKF British Championships.

Despite being the youngest and least experienced, six-year-old Diya Shanmugaraj led the assault on the medals table, by taking a bronze in the under eight kata event. Another six year-old Ben Head took silver in the same category.

Kelsey Whiteland and Phoebe Davis contested the girls 16 and 17 kata. Whiteland took silver in the beginner category, while Davis took bronze in the advanced category.

Worting’s Anthony Parmar had his best nationals to date. The 11-year-old took silver in kata and then won gold in the individual kumite (fighting) 10 to 11 years category. He also added another gold with success in the team fighting.

Popley’s Sibi Kumara carried on his winning streak to take gold in the boy’s 12 to 13 years lightweight kumite division and also won gold in the team event.

European Champion Lucas Spiers was unlucky not to take the double as he was narrowly beaten in the final of the boy’s 12 to 13 years heavyweight category.

Abi Gray continued the winning streak taking gold in both individual kumite and team kata, as well as silver in both kata and team kumite.

Tadley’s Lexi Green rounded it off for the girls, with a splendid silver after four gruelling rounds in the mixed under-10 kumite and a bronze in the team kumite.

In the older categories, Ben Casey fared well taking a bronze in the boy’s 16 to 17 individual kumite and silver in the team kumite.

Coach Kevin McAuslan-Crine retained his title with a gold in the veteran’s kata and bronze in the team kata.

He then joined the youngsters, Jim Feighery-Murphy and Terry Brigdale to take gold in the men’s over 18 team kumite.

Newcomer Sean Feighery ended the haul with a gold in the men’s kumite beginner category.

Overall the club took 14 golds, 13 silvers and 12 bronze medals.

Coach Crine said: “As always I’m very proud of the whole squad. I’m especially pleased to see Basingstoke growing in strength. A few years ago it was only Jim and I competing. Now we have 13 representing Basingstoke.”
