The Hampshire Junior Mega-Finals proved to be an enormous success with around 200 children attending the Everest Community College for the event.

Basingstoke players all gave a good account of themselves. Daniel Shek won the under seven Supremo prize with a maximum score of six points.

Shek is a member of the Basingstoke Junior Chess Club and attends Yateley Manor School.

Another Basingstoke player to get first place and claim the Supremo prize was Daneshill Primary School pupil Daniel Yu at the under-11 age group with 5 ½ points out of 6.

Both these young players are eligible to enter the National Giga Final competitions to be held later this year.

Three other Basingstoke players Brodie Jackson and Luca Thuy at under 10 and Adam Matthews at under 18, just missed out by a point, on Giga Final qualification after giving good performances.

Ivan Stipcevic was the winner of the Basingstoke Individual Championship.

In the final playing with the black pieces, he managed a win against Paul Boyd.

Stipcevic will become the first holder of the new Joe French Cup, named after the Chess Club secretary who passed away last year.

The Charles Henshaw Tourney has been won by Adrian Smith, who held off Peter Beldaus and Adam Matthews who finished equal second.

l In the Berkshire League Division One, Basingstoke went down 5-1 at league champions Sandhurst A.

A David Graham win gained the Basingstoke’s point.
