JUSTIN Rose certainly looked in contention after the first round of the US Masters on Thursday, but since then his challenge has faulted.

The former Robert May’s pupil fired an impressive three under round of 69 on the opening day at Augusta, which left him just three shots behind day one leader and defending champion Jordan Spieth.

Friday’s day two was a completely different story, as Rose was soon in trouble on the front nine with dropped shots at holes three, five and six on his way to a round of 77, which was five over par.

Any hopes of him climbing back up the leader board were dashed on Saturday, as he suffered again early on in his round, with bogeys at four, five and six and a double bogey at seven.

The Englishman recovered with four birdies on the back nine, as he finished with a one over par 73.

This left him in tied 13th and six shots behind leader Spieth going into today’s final round.

Rose gets his final underway at 6.45pm this evening.
