MARTIAL arts again enjoyed great success at the Basingstoke and Deane Sports Awards.

Senior Team winners Shin Gi Tai Martial Arts Academy squad included two European champions, five European runners-up and a World Cup champion and also won 19 national titles.

Bryan Andrews co-owner of Shin Gi Tai Martial Arts said: “Winning this award is a great way to celebrate what was an excellent year for us as a team. We continue to get better every year which is great to see.”

Judo coach Paul Hamilton won the Professional Coach award for his work in the sport in north Hampshire.

He is the leading club coach at Summit and AWE Judo Clubs and also teaches over 190 students in 10 schools across Basingstoke and Tadley. Under his guidance the Summit club has grown from 30 to 200 and AWE from four to 40.

Hamilton said: “This is the fourth time I have been nominated so it is fantastic to win and is really great for the sport of judo. I am looking forward to the club’s growing further.”

Cameron Lloyd excels in swimming and karate which helped him win the Junior Disability award.

The 16-year-old who took part of the British Mencap and Special Olympics and was surprised and delighted to win his award.

Mandi Miles was a worthy winner of the Senior Disability award.

The 39-year-old from Ramsdell won the England United crown in the disabled kata and was second in ladies veterans open kata and is now training hard for the World Championships in Dublin and will also be competing against able bodied competitors at the European Championships in Romania.

Mandi has been in a wheelchair since she was 15 and only took up karate a year ago at the Shin Gi Tai Martial Arts Academy.

Miles said: “I really love it and being part of something and really enjoy it I think I have found the sport for me. I did not think for one minute I would win the award.”

Sian Reilly retained the Junior Official for a second year running and has been selected to be a corner judge at the British Taekwondo National Championships. The 17-year-old from Whitchurch said: “I never thought I would win the award two years running so I am very pleased.”
