POPLEY’S Sibi Kumara enjoyed success as an individual fighter, having made his name as team fighter.

Kumara has represented Su-Ha-Ri and the Wado International Karate-Do Federation England's team for several years. His forte is kumite (sparring) and specifically the three man team event.

He has been part of the Su-Ha-Ri team that has won the Wado International Karate-Do Federation British Championships, as well as the England team that enjoyed success in the European and World Championships.

Despite his multitude of team gold medals, Kumara had never won an individual one. It seemed his true ability only shone when he was fighting a team.

This was all to change when Kumara ventured to Weston-super-Mare to represent Su-Ha-Ri Karate School in the Western All Styles Championships.

He contested the boys 10 to 12years 45 kg plus category and breezed through the first two rounds.

Then in the semi-finals a 3-3 draw saw the judges decide the winner 2-1 in favour of the Popley fighter.

In true Kumara style in the final, he kept the spectators on the edge of their seats as he trailed 3-1, but delivered a three point kick to the head to win 4-3.

Wado International Karate-Do Federation England coach, Kevin Crine said: “I’m so pleased for Sibi. He has won so much for his team, proving him to be one of the best fighters in the world.

“I’m glad he now has an individual gold to add to his collection. I’m sure this is the first of many.”

Su-Ha-Ri Karate School trains at Basingstoke Sports Centre on Friday evening from 6.45pm to 7:45pm and at Tadley Swimming Pool on Wednesday evening from 6pm to 7pm.
