BASINGSTOKE Hockey Club teams played their last games before their mid season break last weekend.

The men’s first team drew 2-2 at home against Wanderers.

The home side opened the scoring when Jed Mills intercepted a visitors pass at the top of the D and slotted home.

The advantage was doubled with a great team goal as Graham Lang sent the ball to Mills, who in turn found Ben Jubin.

He in turn combined with Dean Record and Mark Smith and Smith’s strike on goal was cleared by a Wanderers defender, straight onto Grant Rouse’s stick and he lifted the ball over the away goalkeeper.

Wanderers made sure the spoils were shared as they scored either side of the break, even if the home side dominated.

The second team had another convincing result, with a 9-1 victory against Yateley.

Basingstoke’s first goal came from a flowing move down the right saw Alex Miller feed Ben Shaughnessy at the top of the D and a first time hit went through the goalkeeper’s legs.

Basingstoke doubled their advantage as Shaughnessy deflected the ball into the net after good work from Paul Handley.

Yateley then pulled a goal back, but on the stroke of half time, Shaughnessy completed a first half hat-trick.

Five minutes after the break, Basingstoke added fourth after Jeremy Smith scored following a short corner.

Soon after, it became 6-1 as Miller and Will Jewkes both scored and goal number seven came from a direct through-ball from Greg Smith who found Jewkes to net.

Smith added goal eight and then Shaughnessy and Josh Weir combined for Paul Handley to score.

The fifth team drew 2-2 away against Poole Dolphins, having fallen behind.

A determination Karl Neighbour scored a goal from a rebound off of the opposition goalkeeper, which was created by Geoff Neale.

Poole made it 2-1, but Basingstoke equalised with a fantastic goal from Ryan Over, who was assisted by Phil Unwin.

In the ladies section, the first team won 2-1 away to Fareham.

Basingstoke were the first to attack, winning two short corners. Claire Bowman and Emily Lewis had shots saved early on.

Fareham continued to apply pressure and some great saves from goalkeeper Gemma Carswell prevented them from scoring.

Kirsty Kent carried the ball to just outside the D and crossed it to Claire Bowman, who took the pace off it so that Ruth Crawford could sweep it into the back of the goal.

Fareham won a short corner that was saved on the line by Steph Hazell as it remained 1-0 at half time.

The second half opened with a Fareham break and shot, which was saved by Carswell, and the follow up was cleared off the line by Cath McCormick.

Fareham continued to win short corners, but Carswell kept Basingstoke in the game.

The home side whacked the ball into the back of the goal to equalise.

Mel Trevaskis broke down the right and hit the ball across the goal to Jo Bowden, who controlled it and squared it to Lewis who touched it in on the post to win 2-1.
