BASINGSTOKE Hockey Club men won 4-0 at home against Reigate Priory, even if the visitors started well and won a few short corners. Basingstoke’s Adam Smith made some impressive saves to keep them out.

The home-side’s first goal came when Dean Record drew out the goalkeeper and found Ben Jubin, and he tucked the ball into the open goal. Basingstoke then doubled their advantage as Record fed Jubin to slot low to the goalie’s right.

In the second half, another impressive routine saw it become 3-0.

Dan Bowden started it with a free hit and beat his first man and then slipped the ball to Jed Mills.

He found Mark Smith, who combined with Jubin before Grant Rouse slotted in.

The final goal of the game came as Mills slipped the ball into Grant Rouse who finished with a classic reverse stick top which looped over the goalkeeper.

The second team won 5-2 away to Fareham and their short corner led to their first goal as after a solid save in the home goal, Will Jewkes reacted to the rebound, firing a shot high to the right post which was deflected in by Josh Weir.

Soon after, Basingstoke won their second corner. Jacques Lourens fired an on-target shot low to the goalkeeper’s left.

After the break, Basingstoke scored a third goal as good work from Gary Watts and Jewkes, earning the visitors another short corner. A slight change of routine saw Ben Shaughnessy dispatch a drag flick into the top left corner.

This certainly set Basingstoke on their way and soon after, Greg Smith found Shaughnessy to score his second of the game.

The final goal come with minutes remaining, as Jewkes finished well at the far post.

In the ladies section, the first team won 2-1 away to Eastbourne. Early pressure from Basingstoke paid off as Catriona Bausor’s strike found Claire Bowman, who deflected into the net. Eastbourne replied by converting a short corner.

The visitors left it secure the winner after they converted a very composed short corner routine.

Roxy O’Dea at the top of the D, drove it to the right and then slipped the ball back inside for Bowman to score.
