Basingstoke Hockey Club men’s second team are now six points clear at the top of Hampshire Division three, after a magnificent 7-1 home win against Hamble, writes KIRSTY NOVIS.

A quick ball from Alex Miller in midfield found Will Malone who played in Josh Weir. Weir squared the ball to Ben Shaughnessy, who deflected the ball over the advancing goalkeeper.

Basingstoke scored their second goal from a short corner, as Shaughnessy fired low into the left corner.

The home side continued to press Hamble back as Weir, Paul Handley and Chris Garrett all worked well.

It was Weir again who created the chance for Shaughnessy, who on the stroke of half time, turned the last defender and fired into the top right corner.

In the second half, Shaughnessy and Handley combined well to feed Greg Smith at the top of the D who sent the ball crashing into the roof of the net.

Basingstoke fifth goal came from a rebounded short corner which Weir finished well with a reverse stick.

Hamble then scored, but the home side netted twice more as Shaughnessy found himself unmarked at the back post for a simple turn and slap shot and then Smith netted his second of the day.

The first team lost 4-1 away to Bournemouth as Dean Record got their goal assisted by Grant Rouse.

The fourth team continued their charge up the table with a convincing 4-0 win over Fleet and Ewshot.

The deadlock was broken late in the first half, when Alex Stewart deflected the ball in from Liam Harrison’s penalty corner.

James Warman provided Eliot Boyd with the space in the circle to finish on the reverse. Boyd claimed his second shortly after, when Alex Simons found him at the back post.

Warman then turned provider again as Will Newcombe netted Basingstoke’s fourth.

The fifths lost 2-1 away to Romsey, as Chris Jenkins scored their only goal from a short corner and their man of the match was Kyle McFee.

In the ladies section, the first team bounced back to winning ways with a 2-1 win at home against Surbiton.

Fi Parker took the ball into the D and passed it to Catriona Bausor. Bausor lifted it for Jo Bowden to direct it in at chest height, for an early lead.

After this, goalkeeper Gemma Carswell made some impressive saves and the second half began with a series of Basingstoke short corners before Surbiton equalised.

The home side won the game after another short corner had initially been saved, but Kirsty Kent controlled the loose ball and scored the winner.

Surbiton put more pressure on the home team but the defence remained strong, with solid tackles from Tanya Finch and Steph Hazell.

The fifths lost 1-0 at home to Haslemere as player of the match Fiona Oxlade made her debut in goal.

The seconds lost 1-0 to Yateley at home and the thirds won 2-1 to Havant.
