WESSEX Wyvern, the Basingstoke based modern pentathlon club scooped three team and three individual medals, including two golds at the British Modern Biathlon Championships held at Solihull.

In the men’s masters event, Basingstoke’s Spencer Turner produced a stunning 100m swim time of 56 seconds, by far the fastest on the day, and then did enough in the one mile run to edge out his nearest rival to win individual gold and become the national masters champion.

Turner was also part of the Wyvern’s men’s masters team, who with fellow teammates Andy Grice and Andy Poole combined to win the overall masters team event. Grice secured the individual bronze medal, whilst Poole finished 12th.

In the girl’s under-16 section, Maddie Deadman fought off stiff competition from Newcastle’s Jane Brown to retain her national title. Deadman’s excellent run was sufficient to hold-off Brown’s impressive 200m swim, eventually wining by 20 points.

Deadman, along with Rebecca Poole and Maisie Grice, also won silver in the girl’s under-16 team event, with Grice and Poole running the first and third fastest mile runs, respectively. Poole also finished a very creditable 12th overall in the individual event.

In the masters women’s event, the Wyvern team of Michelle Matson, Jo Taylor and Helen Patrick produced a number of personal bests to win gold. Taylor and Matson finished fourth and fifth in the individual event.

In the girl’s under-14 event, Chloe Wright finished a very creditable 51st with personal best times in the individual event.
