BASINGSTOKE Hockey Club men’s first team suffered a narrow 4-3 lost at Wimborne in the Hampshire Surrey One, writes KIRSTY NOVIS.

The home team took a 2-0 lead, but Basingstoke replied as Dan Bowden played in Jed Mills who passed to Grant Rouse to score Sam King and Andy Preston were behind the goalkeeper, expecting the Wimborne forward to smash the ball through them into the goal. Instead, a mis-hit saw the ball trickle across the line. for a 3-1 lead The second half saw Basingstoke start well and create scoring chances and they reduced the lead with an attack down the right, which saw Rouse fed Mills to score.

Basingstoke upped the intensity with another attack down the right. Bowden found Grant Rouse, who squared it for Ben Jubin to equalise.

Bowden was then tackled by three attackers, and a simple pass around and goal led to Wimbourne scoring the winning goal.

The men’s second team won 3-0 at home to Wimborne and despite this it was Basingstoke goalkeeper Jorge Spicer who was first into action to make a save. Basingstoke responded well, the midfield of Alex Miller, Greg Smith, Jacques Lourens and Gary Watts started to dominate.

It was not long before Josh Weir turned a defender and fed Ben Shaughnessy at the top of the D to score.

Wimborne responded well, but the home side made it 2-0 as Lourens dispatched a short corner.

With 10 minutes of the half remaining, Basingstoke scored a third goal as Greg Smith beat two defenders before feeding Shaughnessy for his second.

After the break, there were no further goals as chances went begging for the home side.

The men’s fifth team lost 2-0 away to Portsmouth. Despite the loss, it was a strong performance by Basingstoke development team.

The visitors were under pressure from the opening whistle, but it remained 0-0 at the break due to fine goalkeeping by man of the match Andy Stent ably supported by fine performances from defenders Jamie MacQuillin and Robbie Edwards.

In the second half, Portsmouth quickly 2-0 up, but Basingstoke finished strongly with great midfield play from Geoff Neale, Mikhal Saujani and Euan Rixson.
