BASINGSTOKE table tennis star Amy Blagbrough won a bronze medal at the UK Sainsbury’s School Games in Manchester.

Blagbrough was representing South West England. She was one of 1,600 athletes taking part in 12 sports, including disability events, and stayed at the athletes’ village.

The opening ceremony was a fantastic event, with a variety dance and music acts and guest appearances from sports stars like athlete Dina Asher-Smith and swimmers Adam Peaty and Ellie Simmonds.

The following morning, Blagbrough was in action in the team event which saw the South West face South East England, North East England and Ireland, with the top two teams qualifying for the semi-finals.

After a long day of matches, it came down to the final game of the day between Blagbrough and North East England’s Jasmine Wong for a place in the semi-final.

Wong started brilliantly and won the first two sets, but Blagbrough raised her game and played some fantastic table tennis, winning the next three sets and the match.

The next day saw the the South West team lose their semi-final to England North West, which set up a bronze medal match against Scotland.

Again, great performances from the girls saw them brush aside the Scottish team 4-2 to claim a podium finish.

The last day of competition saw the individual tournament take place.

Blagbrough won her group, recording excellent wins against the players ranked number two in both Wales and Scotland, but she was knocked out in the last 16.
