FORMER Italian Olympic rider Vittoria Panizzon completed a one-two in the inaugural KBIS CIC*** competition held at Wellington Horse Trials.

There was a high-class field of 55 riders for the event and after the dressage, Panizzon was second on her own Merlots Magic on 40.4 and third on Pat and Amy Lambert’s Chequers Play The Game, with just 0.3 per cent between them.

The dressage leader was Izzy Taylor, riding Guy Avis’ KBIS Briarlands Matlida, which was just 1.7 per cent ahead.

The cross country course saw 49 starters and there were 30 clear rounds, with Japan’s Toshiyuki Tanaka and Delago the only pair round within the time.

With Chequers picking up 20 penalties en route, it was Panizzon’s third ride, Sally Bullen’s Borough Pennyz, which rose up the leader board from 14th after dressage thanks to just two time penalties.

The showjumping round saw 15 clear, but dressage leader Taylor withdrew Matilda, while Merlot’s Magic had two poles down.

Borough Pennyz jumped another clear to take first place for Panizzon and Merlots Magic came second.

Taylor secured third spot on Thistledown Poposki and the rider also won the Mibot eight and nine-year-old advanced section on KBIS Starburst.

Oliver Townend took the Watson Thomas advanced section riding the Jumbo gelding, Dunbeau, while Rapheal II pipped William Fox-Pitt and Cool Mountain to the post in the Two Gallop Advanced section thanks to a three second faster cross country round.

A number of special prizes were awarded over the weekend, including a Prestige Saddle to the best placed after dressage in the intermediate section, which was scooped by Fox-Pitt, riding Secret Night.
