JUNIOR British figure skating champion Danielle Harrison returned home to present medals to the competitors in Basingstoke Ice Skating Club’s Beginner Elements competition.

This new competition allows skaters of all abilities to compete with their peers, with a focus on the basic skills needed for figure skating.

This encourages a strong platform of skills to build upon as they progress towards the formal National Ice Skating Association structure.

Harrison, who grew up in Basingstoke and started her career in her home town, now trains in Dundee with Andrew Smith and Great Britain Olympic coaches Simon and Debi Briggs.

She has the best access to facilities and coaching as she works towards her dream of competing at the Winter Olympics.

Harrison said: “It’s lovely to be back home and to be able to support the young skaters in the club whilst I’m here. The club has always supported my skating and it’s great to give something back to them.

“Hopefully, the skaters today will continue to love my sport and be inspired from their efforts to continue to work hard.”

Harrison has qualified for the British Championships, which take place between December 1 and 6 at Ice Sheffield and will hope to defend her crown. She will be joined there by three other skaters from Basingstoke – Lucy Anne Walker, Oliver Parrington-Tyler and Jessica Gill.

Another Basingstoke skater, Lucy Booth, competed at the British Solo Dance Championships at Ice Sheffield.

She competed in the Advanced Novice Ladies Solo Dance and finished 10th overall, with her best performance in the free dance, where she was placed ninth.
