BASINGSTOKE Kickboxing Organisation (BKO) enjoyed a father and son winning double at the Northants Open thanks to George and Ron and George Peploe.

Fighting in the Men’s Open weight section, which had top fighters from Britain, including European champions and GB squad members, George Peploe fought his way through several rounds to meet Blaine Watson in the final.

A very close and exciting match ensued and at the end the scores were level. This was still the case after an extra time extension, so the fight went to sudden death.

Watson launched himself forward, but Peploe scored a face punch, which won him the Grand Championship and £150 in prize money.

Ron Peploe entered the veterans over-35 years open weight category and after three wins he met world champion and renowned fighter Daz Ellis in the final.

Points were scored evenly during an energetic bout and at the final bell the scores were level at 16-16.

Extra time saw no let-up, but Peploe got the last point to win the bout 21-20, making him a grand champion as well. He also collected £150 in prize money.

In the ladies novice section, Kerry Anderson notched up her first gold medal by employing superior strategy to beat each of her opponents.

Anderson has been kickboxing for a year and has competed in several national and international tournaments, placing in most of them, but this was her first win.

Vinnie Turner, meanwhile, entered several categories, including the black belt and veterans section, and finished third in both.

Sean Adams entered the light continuous category and fought a round robin with two other fighters, finishing second.

In other tournaments, BKO fighters travelled to Amsterdam to compete in the Dutch Open.

George Peploe fought in three sections, reaching the quarter finals in two, where he knocked out one opponent out with a spinning kick to the head.

In semi-finals in the men’s under-84kg section he met a very experienced and talented German fighter.

With five seconds to go, Peploe, who was trailing by one point, launched a round kick which caught his opponent in the face.

This should have scored him two points and won the bout, but the referee failed to see it and the Basingstoke fighter had to settle for a bronze medal.

Anderson fought in the ladies novice section and came fourth, while Stephen Gribben finished fourth in the men’s senior under-79kg class.

Two members of the BKO squad competed at the Top Ten Tournament at the NEC, in Birmingham.

Lucy Weller fought in the ladies novice section and finished third, while Andy Partridge lost to Roman Brundle, one of the best fighters in the world, in the opening round.
