ODIHAM’S Alex Danson and the Great Britain Ladies hockey team won the World League semi-final in Valencia with a 2-0 win over China.

It made it a magnificent seventh straight win for the British team in the tournament, as they maintained an impressive 100 per cent record.

Winning the event also secured GB a place in the Rio Olympics next year, where they will hope to improve on the bronze Danson and team collected at London 2012.

The first quarter of the game against China was a cagey affair with Sophie Bray forcing the first save, before Yang Peng tested GB shot stopper Maddie Hinch.

The second quarter remained just as tight, until Hollie Webb broke the deadlock from a penalty corner.

GB doubled their advantage 10 minutes later, after Danson won another penalty corner and from this a diving Danson deflected home Kate Richardson-Walsh's pass to make it 2-0.

With 10 minutes to play China scored from their first penalty corner, but the decision was referred by GB as being a dangerous shot and this was upheld so the goal was disallowed.

With time running out Xiaoxue Zhang's excellent shot was pushed away by the right foot of Hinch to make sure of the 2-0 victory.

Victory in Valencia will give the British girls a great boost ahead of the EuroHockey Championship in August at Lee Valley, while the finals of the World League are three months later in India.
