BASINGSTOKE Hockey Club’s ladies second team completed a league and cup double – but they needed penalty flicks to beat Haslemere in the final of the Hampshire Trophy.

The Hampshire Division Two winners beat their hosts 4-2 in a shootout after the game had ended 2-2.

Both sides converted their first two penalty flicks, with Sarah Mainprise and Ruth Crawford scoring for the visitors.

Goalkeeper Nicky Ball then saved the next two attempts by the home side, with Sarah Shearing slotting home to make it 3-2 to Basingstoke and Gilly Dunning scoring the winner.

In the game itself, the visitors were quickly out of the blocks and led 2-0 after four minutes.

Their opening goal came after Dunning took a quick restart and fed Sarah Shearing, who drove into the circle and fired home.

Basingstoke then won a short corner, which was dispatched by top-scorer Mainprise.

After the break, Haslemere came out hard, pressing up the pitch, and only some good saves from goalkeeper Ball kept them out.

Basingstoke created chances but failed to convert them.

With less than 10 minutes left, the hosts pulled back a goal to set up a gripping finale.

In the last minute of the game, a deflected short corner pulled them level, but Basingstoke were not to be denied victory, winning on penalty flicks.

Basingstoke skipper Bev MacKay said: “Lots of players dream of this season but rarely achieve it.

"To captain such an incredible bunch of ladies has been phenomenal.

“We must say a big thank-you to our coach Luce Streak and everyone who has played, watched and supported."
