BASINGSTOKE Hockey Club’s ladies’ second team were runaway champions of Hampshire Division Two, as they finished their campaign with an impressive 54 points.

Their final game saw them draw 1-1 with visiting fourth-placed Isle of Wight.

The home side started well and, from a penalty corner, a well drilled routine saw Gilly Dunning sweep the ball home. The second half saw the visitors force a couple of good saves from goalkeeper Nicky Ball, before they netted an equaliser late in the game.

Despite the draw, the ladies finished seven points clear of their rivals at the top of the table.

The ladies’ third team drew 3-3 with Southampton thanks to a brace from Ellie Pearson and Nicola Burridge’s single.

Elsewhere in the club, the men’s fourth team cemented third place in the league with a hard-fought 4-3 win away at Poole.

The first team left it late to take a share of the points at Epsom.

Ben Jubin opened the scoring, but when the hosts netted four quick goals, it took a determined performance to fight back.

A brace from Dean Record and a second from Jubin dragged the score to 4-4 and the game finished in a draw.

The second team were disappointed to lose their final game of the season 3-1 to visiting Portsmouth and Southsea.

This was despite leading for most of the game, thanks to Ben Shaughnessy, after he finished off an inch-perfect passing move.

The Pompey side netted three quick goals in the last five minutes and there was no time for the hosts to reply.

The Vikings slipped to a 3-1 reverse against Fareham.
