YEARS of dedication to the local judo community was rewarded as Len Dunce won the Service to Sport award.

The 73-year-old from Sherborne St John started Summit Judo Club in 1969 at the Hurst School. They are now based at Chute Recreation Park in Sherborne St John.

Dunce has been a coach for over 40 years and also became a referee in 1984.

He has also been involved in the twinning competition for the past 21 years.

He is one of the driving forces behind the club, always there to encourage others, and is also a 3rd Dan black belt.

Dunce said: “From what we started back in 1969, we are now the biggest club in Hampshire with over 200 members. We now have one member in the Great Britain Masters squad.”

He added: “The trophy is for the club and it is really nice to win when you look at the other names in the category.”
