KEN Wyld, Tony Leeper, Joe French, Alan Willis and Peter Beldaus were all first-round winners in a new tournament, the Henshaw Tourney.

This is for players with a grade under 120 and for newcomers to the club, and is named after Charles Henshaw, who dedicated the Mayden House premises to the Basingstoke Bridge and Chess Club in the 1970s.

In Southampton League Division Five action, Basingstoke B suffered a narrow 2.5-1.5 loss to promotion rivals Southampton F.

David Graham won his game and Willis collected a draw in his match.

In their next fixture, honours were even with visiting Fareham B as Joe French and Willis both won their games.
