OVERNIGHT snow almost cancelled all the games at Down Grange’s astro pitch last Saturday.

The ladies’ second team were the first side due to play and vice captain Bev Mackay rallied club members and they started to sweep the snow from the pitch.

Time ran out and the game was called off, but they did not give up and within half-an-hour, the entire pitch was cleared.

Their hard work was rewarded as the ladies’ first team beat Guildford 4-1.

Kirsty Kent opened the scoring for the home side, netting after she bravely deflected a short corner past the visiting goalkeeper.

Annalise Whitehead doubled the advantage as she latched on to Kent’s brilliant pass and beat the Guildford goalie one-on-one.

After the break, Roxy O’Dea and Jo Pett completed the scoring for Basingstoke, before the visitors managed a late consolation goal.

The second team did play on Sunday, cruising into the next round of the Hampshire Trophy with a 9-0 win.

Back in league action last Saturday, Holly Dowds was the third team’s hat-trick hero in a convincing 8-2 win against Winchester.

Jude Rice bagged a brace, while Charlotte Barsby, Nicola Burridge and Gracie Moore were also on target.

In the men’s section, the second team lost 5-4 at home to New Forest after a late winner.

Basingstoke were 3-0 down, but fast-paced forward Rob Sheldrake found the net to reduce the deficit.

Skipper Ian Watson showed great composure to calmly slot home a second before half-time, while goals from Mark Easto and Ben Jubin made it 4-3 to the home side after the break.

The visitors responded with an equaliser and a late breakaway won them the game.

The third team moved to just a point outside the promotion places after they beat second-placed Havant 4-0, thanks to goals from Dan Holding, Rob Lloyd, Sam Payne and Graeme Dyall.

The fourths got back to winning ways as they won 3-0 at Wimborne.

All of the goals came in the second-half from Adam Neighbour, Jayden Wong and Eliot Boyd.

The men’s fifth team travelled to top-of-the-table Petersfield and lost 10-0.
