ALLSTARS badminton players Alice Follett and Nicola Lewis won the Basingstoke Christmas Junior Restricted Doubles Tournament held at Queen Mary’s College.

The event was run by Basingstoke and District Badminton League for the benefit and development of junior badminton in the Basingstoke area.

It was aimed at giving secondary school-aged badminton players the opportunity to test themselves in a comp-etitive environment.

In total, 90 matches were played on a round-robin basis, with the pair amassing most points being crowned champions.

The overall winners were the Allstars pair of Follett and Lewis. They picked up 269 points and were also the top female pair.

Second were Basingstoke Junior Badminton Club’s (BJBC) Hannah Scott and Westgate’s Isobel Parkes on 257 points.

They just edged out the boys’ section winners, BJBC duo George Tubb and Jack Barnard, who finished on 255.

Second in the boys’ section were Ricky Stephens (BJBC) and Owen Robinson (Costello) with 224. They finished fifth overall, behind Allstars’ pair Katie Willoghby and Melissa Jasper, who collected 242 points.

The rest of the field was made up of Josh Goldring (BJBC/Hurst) and Luke Batty (Hurst), Amy Sui-Lee and Molly Dewey (BJBC), Callum Greenwood and Rocky Wyatt (BJBC), Harry Feast and Oliver Whatley (Costello/|Allstars) and Verity Budlynski and Lou-aira De La Cruz (Challoner).

The youngest pairing were Feast and Whatley and they showed a great never-say-die attitude.

Feast even carried on after taking a full smash to the side of his face.

The tournament proved to be a great success and thanks must go to Linda Rapacioli, Pete Bevell, Ruth Cairns, Phil Cooper, Phil Oxford, Linda Oxford, Sam Kersley, Robert Scott, and Nick Chandler, sport centre manager at Queen Mary’s College, for supplying the venue.
