BASINGSTOKE Hockey Club’s ladies continued their winning start to the season with a 2-0 win over visiting Wanderers.

The home side opened the scoring after the break as Roxy O’Dea broke around the base line and passed to Fi Parker.

She flashed the ball across the Wanderers goal, where Rose Evill expertly directed it into the net.

The lead was doubled moments later, as Parker scored after excellent skill and determination from Catriona Bausor.

The seconds continued their winning ways with a 3-1 success at Havant.

Basingstoke controlled the game from the start and a rebound from a short corner found Ruth Crawford to score.

Another penalty-corner saw a short ball to Crawford on the left and from her rebound, Laura Marks added a second After the break, the home side pulled a goal back, but the visitors made sure of the victory as Tanya Finch broke away and found Bev Mackay in the circle and to score.

The third team won 1-0 against Petersfield, who had a few chances early on, but strong defending from Amy Sambell and Nicky Dowds meant they did not manage to score.

In the second half, great team work from Rachel Bomphrey and Jude Bird gave Tara Stone the chance to score.

The fourth team lost 1-0 at home to New Forest, while the fifths went down 4-1 away at Petersfield and the ladies masters won 2-1 away at Staines.

In the men’s section, Basingstoke continued their recent good run with a well-earned 3-1 home win over Bournemouth.

The visitors scored first and then Adam Smith kept Bournemouth at bay with some fine saves, before the home side equalised with a tap in from Alex Hope.

Basingstoke took the lead as Danny Bowden converted a short corner rebound and their third goal came from a Grant Rouse deflection off a pass from Jed Mills.

The men’s second team lost 5-1 away at Southampton, despite taking a well-deserved lead as Clinton Douglass pounced on a loose defensive pass and freed Paul Handley to score.

The home side responded strongly, and despite valiant defending and an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Jordan Jolley, the hosts won the game.

The fourths drew 1-1 at home to Southampton University, coming back from a goal down as Eliot Boyd jabbed home a loose ball at a penalty-corner.

The game stayed evenly-matched throughout and strong performances from Pete Wood and Karl Bishop made sure of the draw.

The fifths won 8-0 away to Poole Dolphins.

A fast start saw Basingstoke score three goals in the opening minutes.

Chris Jenkins opened the scoring, followed by a converted short corner from Kyle McFee and a well-deserved goal from Josh Weir.

Poole rallied towards the end of the first half and stout defending by debutant Robbie Edwards and regular right-back Jamie MacQuillan kept the score at 3-0.

After the break, Weir completed his hat-trick, Karl Neighbour scored with a fine strike and Matt Maleski netted with a coolly-taken goal.

The game ended with Alex Simons deflecting McFee’s shot in to complete the victory.

The thirds won 5-3 at home against Winchester and the Vikings lost 5-0 to Bournemouth.
