ROXY O’Dea scored a late winner as Basingstoke Hockey Club’s ladies first team secured a dramatic victory away at Surbiton.

The visitors had to defend well in the first half but went ahead when Lisa Scarborough fired home after playing a one-two with O’Dea.

Basingstoke had chances to increase their lead but couldn’t take them and were pegged back just before half-time.

Both sides had opportunities to go ahead after the break, with the hosts having a goal disallowed and Basingstoke seeing a penalty-flick saved, but O’Dea nicked the points for the visitors with 10 minutes left.

The second team secured a well-deserved 3-0 victory over visiting Gosport as they continued their quest for promotion.

Having survived some early pressure, Basingstoke took control, winning a number of penalty-corners. These eventually took their toll as Ruth Crawford found the bottom corner. Caroline Mackay doubled the lead from another penalty-corner in the second half, before Tara Stone made the game safe, snaffling up a rebound.

The fourth team lost 1-0 at home to Isle of Wight in their first league game of the season. Kirsty Posthuma went close for Basingstoke but a second-half goal condemned the hosts to defeat.

The men’s second team also suffered a 1-0 defeat, losing away at Camberley and Farnborough in their final pre-season friendly. Paul Handley and Ian Watson went close, but it was the hosts who scored the game’s only goal.

The men’s fourth team travelled to City of Portsmouth for their final friendly and took the lead through Pete Wood. Eliot Boyd and Adam Neighbour also found the net as the visitors led 3-0 at half-time.

Another three goals followed in the second half. James Warman got two of them, either side of a Rob Lloyd strike, to complete a morale-boosting 6-0 victory.
