BASINGSTOKE hockey ladies followed up last week’s tri-tournament success with a 2-0 victory over visiting league rivals Teddington.

Fi Parker came closest in an evenly contested opening period, hitting the post with a neat deflection.

The home side’s Sarah Lucas and Janine White were solid at the back but Teddington’s one big chance was saved by the outstretched arm of keeper Gemma Carswell.

The second period was largely contested in midfield with Jo Pett, Roxy O’Dea and new recruit Rose Evill looking strong but it was not until the hour mark that Basingstoke clicked into gear.

Finally the reward came when Fi Parker latched onto a Kirsty Kent pass to score and the same player made it two with a smart deflection from captain Catriona Bausor’s pass.

The ladies conclude their pre-season with a tough away trip to Eastcote, who finished fifth in the league above them last season, before taking on Fareham at home a week on Saturday (11.45am).

The men tested themselves away to higher-ranked Trojans, and eventually lost 3-2 to a side who will start the season in South League Premier Two.

Trojans took a 1-0 lead thanks to a Basingstoke defensive error, but this seemed to spur the visitors into life with two short corners saved on the post.

Just before half-time they equalised when Dean Record unselfishly slipped the ball to Alex Hope to slap home.

As the second half commenced, Trojans again started the brighter but Basingstoke’s Record had a short corner attempt saved.

Trojans re-took the lead but Record levelled things after a goal mouth scramble, only for the home side to score again.

This weekend the men face Ashford (Middlesex) at Down Grange with a 1.30pm push back.
