BASINGSTOKE Hockey club teammates Gavin Stones and Richard Slator came face-to-face in the final of the Veterans World Cup in the Hague.

Stones was part of the England LX 60 White team, while Slator was playing for the England LX 60 Reds side.

Both sides fought they way through the pool section of the competition which saw the Whites beat South Africa, Australia, Holland and Egypt.

The final was a close contest. The Whites led 1-0 at half-time and they doubled the advantage after the break as Zahid Arain scored his second of the game.

The Reds set up a grandstand finish with a goal five minutes from time, but the Whites held on to win 2-1.

A third member from the club, Peter Cowen, turned out for Wales, who finished sixth in the competition having lost to England Reds in the pool games.

As well as three players, Basingstoke also supplied an umpire for the event in Roy Woolley.

All of them will now hope to be selected for the next World Cup, which is to be held in Australia in 2016.
