LASHAM Gliding Club members enjoyed great success at the World Gliding Championships at Rayskala, in Finland.

Brothers Steve and Howard Jones, who are both members of the Hampshire club, dominated the inaugural 20m two-seat class event.

They won six out of the seven races, and missed out on a clean sweep by just 33 seconds in their final flight.

The brothers’ gold medals completed a notable piece of gliding history. Steve had previously won world gold in 2001 and a third Jones brother, Phil, had been world champion in the 18m class in 2006. Howard’s medal this year completes the family treble.

Another pair of Lasham-based brothers, Jez and Richard Hood, took third and fourth places in a very closely fought Standard Class.

Going into the final race, four pilots were in contention for the gold medal. They were world number one Sebastian Kawa of Poland, the Hood brothers and eventual winner Belgian Bert Schmelzer.

The victory for the Jones brothers and a third place finish from Jez Hood helped the British team to finish in the top spot, winning the overall team cup by a convincing margin over France and Sweden.

In the Club class, Lasham’s Gerrard Dale produced a highly creditable performance to finish fifth.
