BASINGSTOKE Gymnastic Club’s boys’ squad enjoyed success at the Southern Region Championships, hosted by Dynamo School of Gymnastics in Southampton.

Basingstoke were represented right across different age groups and first to compete was Christian Corneal in the under-eight category.

This was his first regional competition and he did very well as he finished fourth overall.

He won silver medals for his handspring on vault and horizontal bar, while picking up bronze medals for pommel horse and rings.

In the under-nines, Tobias Splain had a great day as he finished in the bronze medal position with a score of 69.70.

He won on parallel bars, took silver on pommel horse and claimed bronze medals for rings and vault.

In the same age group, Toby Woods finished fourth with a points total of 66.75. He won a well-deserved gold on pommel horse and a bronze on the floor.

Also representing Basingstoke at under-nine level was Oliver Whiles, who finished 15th.

In the under-10 age group, Nicholas McKay finished 10th with a total of 64.60, which included an excellent winning performance on pommel horse. Teammates Owen Hastings (59.25) and Oliver Buckley (58.25) finished 15th and 17th respectively.

In the under-11s competition, Peter Robinson (65.15) was 10th and Josh Kershaw (64.80) came 12th.

To complete the day, in the under-12s, Issa Kalfon finished eighth with a total score of 45.40, while an excellent floor exercise won him a gold medal.

The Basingstoke team was also represented by judges Thomas Forster and Henry Mantel.

Forster recently returned from university studies to take part in the 2014 Senior British Champion-ship hosted at the Echo Arena in Liverpool.

Basingstoke Gymnastic Club’s men’s artistic head coach, Alberto Cacace, was delighted with all of the boys’ performances and the good results achieved after many months of preparation for the event.

Cacace congratulated the coaching and judging supporting team of Peter Syckelmoore and Fiona Creelie for their assistance and support during many months of training and throughout the day.
