BASINGSTOKE and Deane has 12 finalists in the annual Hampshire and Isle of Wight Sport Awards which take place at the St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton tonight.

Over 200 athletes, coaches, volunteers, teams and clubs were put forward for the awards, but only 54 have made the final shortlist.

The Basingstoke Gymnastic Club, had seven winners at the Basingstoke and Deane Sports Awards, have three finalists.

They are up against the Poseidon Boxing Juniors in competition for Club of the Year. Brian Donegan is in the final for the Service to Sport award along with Isle of Wight’s Gordon Osborne from the world of swimming and badminton’s Dennis Blazye from East Hampshire.

Anne Bidmead is in the Performance Coach category along with fellow Basingstoke finalist Bryan Andrews from the Shin Gi Tai Martial Arts Academy and Portsmouth gymnastics coach Julian Such.

The Shin Gi Tai Martial Arts Academy have a great chance in the Masters Sportsman.

This was because Lindsey Andrews and Mark Nevola are two of the finalists, with Test Valley kick boxer Gordon Mitchell the other.

In the Junior Sportswomen category Basingstoke ice skater Danielle Harrison and Basingstoke and Mid Hants Athletics Kierra Barker have made the final three, along with footballer Laura Rafferty from Southampton.

English Channel swimmer Rachel Hessom is in the same Outstanding Personal Achievement category as Isle of Wight sailor Natasha Lambert and New Forest swimmer Ella Richardson.

Basingstoke Bluefins and Dove House School coach Andrea Merritt is in the final of the Participation Coach category along with gym coach Emma West from Southampton and fellow swimming coach Barry Alldrick from the New Forest.

Queen Mary’s College student Alice Weaving is in the final three for Junior Volunteer along with Eastleigh’s Efion Eade and Wallis Canning from the Isle of Wight.

Basingstoke Parkrun Event Director Lynn Brastock is a finalist in Senior Volunteer and is up against the Isle of Wight’s Koo Janzen and David Old from the Test Valley.
