Basketball club needs players for junior section

They have been able to do this thanks to a grant from the Basingstoke and Deane Community Leisure Trust fund, administered by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight community Foundation.

The money will go a long way towards helping out with the coaching and hall hire expenses for the year to come.

The club now have three fully qualified level 2 coaches, all CRB checked, and two other experienced coaches ready to help out.

All they need now is the players to come and join them, with the hope of a team being created to compete in tournaments and local friendly games.

The training sessions are at Queen Mary’s College Sports Hall on Saturdays from 2pm to 3.30pm (under-12s finish at 3pm).

The sessions are open to boys and girls aged eight to 18. These sessions are priced at £3 to help cover some of the expenses.

The Blizzards’ latest league outing saw them enjoy a 79-64 victory at Woking.

The first basket went to the home side, before the visitors replied with a three-pointer from Joey Haynes, but they still trailed at the end of the first quarter 17-13.

The Blizzards then took control of the game thanks to 18 unanswered points from Rob Gerrard and Haynes, with two more three-pointers, as they led 36-30 at half-time.

After the break, the visitors extended their lead to 49-38, but Woking hit back to reduce the advantage to two points.

The Blizzards’ Josh Klein scored a three-pointer and two free throws – with 10 minutes left – to make it 54-49.

Aaron Taylorson and Adam Paddon kept the pressure on the home side as the Blizz-ards eventually won 79-64 It was a great team effort, especially on defence, as Tom Mavronicholas and Adam Paddon marked Woking’s best two players out of the game.

The Blizzards’ next home league game is against REME Arbofield on March 11, with an 8.25pm tip off.
