JOHN Ahlan’s magical treble led KG B to a 6-4 win over Minitec A in division one of the Basingstoke and District Table Tennis League.

The penholder powered his way through his opponents with his trademark attacking play.

Dave Kimberley said: “He rolled back the years and the pick of the victories was the (3-0) win over Andy Parker.”

Ahlan was well supported by Steve Ng, who made full use of his reverse penhold backhand technique.

Alpha Cars have picked up pace with their first 10-0 of the season against Minitec B.

Minitec’s Ron Powell was full of praise for his opponents and said: “Denise [Weller] deserved to win at least one game against Hector [Castro]. He won in deuce with two net points but Alpha must be in contention for the title.”

Hannington’s team of two went down 10-0 to reigning champions St Peters A.

Dominic Ng of Queen’s C (Z) struck fool’s gold as he beat Winklebury’s John Golding in the final match of the night, but his side still lost 9-1. Colin Wilkes and the lightning quick backhand of Peter Bradley saw both record trebles for the winners.

In a match which Queen’s B described as a “great evening of sport”, they took victory over Aldworth A with a score of 10-0. Aldworth’s Jared Binner came closest to winning, losing twice in five-games to Bob Walker and Paritosh Singh.

It was a tough night for Queens G as they got handed their first 10-0 defeat by Oakley A. There were strong performances from Oakley, most notably David Smith, who only dropped two games in his treble.

Sarah Whithorn and Jamie Cole played well to win their three matches but both suffered a scare as they were taken to five sets by Queens’ Tommy Wan.
