OLYMPIC hockey bronze medalist Alex Danson passed on her wealth of sporting experience to pupils of the Vyne Community School as part of the Sky Sports living for sport project on Monday.

The 27-year-old is an athlete mentor for the project and proved to be a big hit as her enthusiasm for her sport and inspiring others to follow her is infectious.

In total she was involved with four classes during the day, which included a question and answer session and well as some hockey tips.

There was also chance for the pupils to have their pictures taken with the bronze medal that Danson won earlier in the summer at the Olympics.

Great Britain hockey star Danson said: “I have been really busy since the Olympics as a mentor and travelled all over. It is nice to do my first local school and it is a really quick trip from my parents’ home in Odiham. This project is just brilliant and I really enjoy going into the schools and inspiring young people.

“I think the Olympics has made more of an impact than anyone could imagine.

“At my own hockey club in Reading the junior section is over subscribed which is unbelievable.”

Head of PE Kevin Light was delighted to have the hockey star at the school and said: “To have a high profile athlete here can only inspire and she stresses this is where I came from so you can do the same.”

Vyne pupil Brett Duffy (14), who attended one of the classes, said: “It is not every day you wake up and think you are going to meet an Olympian. It was a fantastic experience and really inspiring.”

Danson would love other local secondary schools to get involved and she added: “There is no catch. It is a free you just have to sign up to the website.”
