WHITCHURCH United won through to the final of the North Hants Senior Cup with a 4-1 win over local rivals Overton United last Wednesday.

Things got off to a bad start for Overton, who play their football three divisions below Whitchurch, as they conceded a goal with just three minutes on the clock. Danny Phillips’ shot was fumbled by visiting goalkeeper Sean O’Brien and Matt Austin prodded the loose ball home.

More chances followed for the hosts before they extended their lead on 28 minutes, Austin getting his second goal of the game, and while Whitchurch had further opportunities, it remained 2-0 at the break.

Overton enjoyed more of the game in the second half and they pulled a goal back thanks to Luke Neller’s stunning strike, but Whitchurch soon restored their two-goal cushion, Tom Lockyer heading home to make it 3-1.

Josh Harfield’s header completed the scoring as the game ticked into injury-time.

Whitchurch’s Wessex League Premier Division trip to Lymington Town was postponed on Saturday, but Overton bounced back with an impressive 2-1 win away at Hampshire Premier League high-flyers Liphook United.

The visitors took the lead on 39 minutes, Neller finding the bottom corner from 20 yards after a defensive error, before doubling their lead just after the hour. A long ball forward was headed to Matt Bennett by a Liphook defender and he made no mistake, beating the home goalkeeper one-on-one.

Liphook pulled a goal back in injury-time, but it was Overton who claimed three points, a result that leaves them ninth in the table.

They host league leaders Baffins Milton Rovers on Saturday, before playing Ludgershall Sports in the Andover Open Cup at Charlton Leisure Centre on Tuesday night.

Whitchurch make the short trip to mid-table Andover Town in the Wessex League on Saturday.
