WHITCHURCH United returned to winning ways in the Wessex League Premier Division with a hard-fought 5-2 win away at Fawley on Saturday.

Danny Phillips hit the post for Whitchurch in the early stages, but the visitors did take an early lead as he turned provider to play in Rudi Plummer on 11 minutes.

Ryan Lambert became the second visiting player to strike the woodwork soon after, and they were made to pay as Fawley scored twice in the space of five minutes to take the lead.

Phillips levelled the game from a Jack McCarthy through-ball and the Jam Boys regained the lead before half-time, Josh Harfield heading home a Lambert free-kick.

Scott Hassell became the third Whitchurch player to rattle the woodwork after the break, hitting the crossbar, but McCarthy made it 4-2 soon after, heading home Phillips’ cross.

McCarthy’s second goal of the game sealed the win in the closing stages, running on to Jack Garner’s through-ball and finding the top corner.

The result leaves Whitchurch third in the table, four points off top spot, ahead of a trip to seventh-placed Folland Sports on Saturday.

Tadley Calleva’s trip to Hythe and Dibden on Saturday was postponed due to an unfit pitch but they are in action tomorrow night, travelling to Fleet Town in the North Hants Senior Cup.
