HARTLEY Wintney made history as they won their first ever FA Trophy tie 1-0 at fellow Southern League Division One outfit AFC Slimbridge.

It was the fourth year on the trot that the home side had lost at this stage of this competition.

The reward for the Row is a trip to Swindon Supermarine in round one on the last weekend of October.

The first big chance of the game came as the first half ended and only a great save from Ollie Hall denied Hartley the lead.

They then scored what turned out to be the winner on 42 minutes, as Paul Hodges from the edge of the area fired home.

Soon after the break, the home goalie was called into action to save shots from Steven Duff and Hodges.

The Hartley goal scorer then hit the post, before Slimbridge had their best chance to level, but Sean Lawson’s shot came back off the post.

It was the second superb cup win in the space of four days for Hartley, after they crushed Southern Premier outfit Farnborough 6-1 in their own back yard to book a place in round two of the Southern League Cup.

The visitors led after just four minutes from Hodges and then great work from Jake Baxter saw Jayde Englefield make it 2-0.

The lead was extended to three thanks to Dean Stow’s penalty and Hodges made it 4-0 just three minutes before the break.

Baxter then added number five, before Aaron Parfitt’s free-kick took the Row’s tally to six on 68 minutes.

Former Reading striker Jamie Cureton scored a late consolation goal, two minutes into added on time.

The victory earned Hartley a home tie in round two against Marlow which will be played in early November.

Joint manager Daniel Brownlie said: “With regards to Saturday. The club are obviously over the moon to have progressed to the next round.

“Every step we take in this competition breaks a record so there's an extra incentive to see how far we can go with it.”

Talking about the Farnborough game, Brownlie added: “We played very well on Wednesday evening - despite Spencer Days interview afterwards saying that the truer reflection of the two team's was with the result of our pre-season friendly with them.

“He put out a team to win a game, but we were five goals better than the team he put out.”

Next for Hartley is a home game against Chalfont St Peter on Saturday in the league.
