HARTLEY Wintney warmed up for their Hampshire Senior Cup quarter-final tie tomorrow evening with a comfortable 4-1 league win at Spelthorne Sports.

The Row will now look forward to their last eight showdown with Southern League Division One side AFC Totton, who are the visitors to the village tomorrow night.

So Hartley will be looking for another giant killing and they have already knocked out holders Havant and Waterlooville in his competition.

Talking ahead of game joint manager Daniel Brownlie said: "It is going to be an exciting game. We are the underdogs and that's a label the boys will relish.

"We've watched Totton a few times since the draw so roughly know what to expect. We've made no secret about wanting to reach a final, so we'll give everything we've got to get through, let's hope it's good enough."

Hartley maintained their 18 points lead at the top of the Combined Counties League Premier Division after their success at Spelthorne.

The first action of note arrived after eight minutes with a strong penalty claim from the visitors.

Sam Argent managed to get on to the end of a George Hallahan flick on only to be baulked inside the penalty box. Referee Boland waved away the claim.

Spelly came into the game and had two good efforts. First on 12 minutes Tommy Mooney fashioned a chance on the edge of the box and his parting shot was comfortably saved by Jake Maddock.

Two minutes later, Calum Beauchamp went on a run through midfield and saw his final shot go just over the crossbar.

On 18 minutes the Row took the lead. A long throw from Steve Noakes on the left saw a flick on from Liam Eagle and Dean Stow was at the back post to score.

The home side responded and good play from Beauchamp on the left set up Jack Ball who shot past the post. On 30 minutes a fast break from the home side saw Sam Bellagdon set up Tommy Mooney who saw his effort go just past the post.

Three minutes before half time Hartley added a second. A free kick in midfield from Stow saw Argent get in front of his marker and head home. On half time a Jack French flick set up Hallahan who headed just past the post. It took the Row just one minute after the break, to add a third goal and effectively seal the win.

Loose play by the home side in midfield saw the ball break down the middle leaving Hallahan with a one-on-one with goalkeeper James Brace. The Hartley striker won the duel shooting low into the goal.

On the hour mark a long clearance from Steve Noakes found Argent and the striker was unlucky to see his final shot go just past the post.

However, he was not to be denied and two minutes later added a fourth goal for the Row, Stow did well to get round the back of the Spelly defence on the left and his accurate cross was headed home at the back post by Argent.

One minute later the same combination almost repeated the same move but this time keeper James Brace pulled of a good save. On 78 minutes, a long range free-kick from Shane Hollomby saw a good save from keeper Brace. Soon after, Hollomby sent Argent through and the striker shot past the post.

The home side made a late rally and on 88 minutes the lively substitute Casey Castle made a good run down the right wing before being upended just inside the penalty box by Luke Perkins. Jack Ball converted the spot kick for a consolation goal.

There was still time for a final effort from the Row. French created a chance for Dec Shuttleworth and the substitute powerful effort brought out a great save from Brace.

After the game Brownlie said: "It was an all round good performance. The result and the performance was good plus it allowed us to test a few things for the Totton game.

"Oddly, what I enjoyed most about Saturday afternoon was that despite winning the game and winning it well, the immediate talk in the changing room from the players was there disappointment in conceding.

"There is a ruthless winning mentality in the squad and one that continues to build."
