HARTLEY Wintney drew 1-1 in their Combined Counties League Premier Division top of the table clash with Westfield at Woking.

The home side got off to a great start scoring after just 2 minutes. Phil Moore sent a long pass beyond the Hartley defence and Max Blackmore gained possession.

The striker held off a challenge by Shane Hollomby before firing past the outrushing goalkeeper Jake Maddock from 18 yards.

Hartley responded well but despite having most of the play found it difficult to breakdown a resolute and well organised home defence.

It was not until 40 minutes that the Row managed their first effort on goal.

Following a throw in on the left Dean Stow sent over a dangerous cross which found Adam New. The substitute’s header was deflected past the post.

On the stroke of half time Ross Cook managed to get in a fierce shot following a cross from Adam Everiss.

The effort was well saved by Gary Ross in the Westfield goal.

Westfield almost repeated their start to the game, by going close early in the second half.

Adam Bellmaine created space on the left and whipped in a dangerous cross.

Max Blackmore got in front of his marker at the near post and his flicked header missed the back post by inches. The home side maintained the pressure and on 53 minutes Blackmore found space within the Hartley box.

His full blooded shot brought out a good save from Maddock.

Hartley responded and on 61 minutes were awarded a free-kick on the 18 yard line after a foul on Cook.

Cook took the kick, but Gary Ross was well positioned to save.

A minute later Sam Argent headed a long ball though into the path of Steven Duff in the clear. The winger tried to lob keeper Ross but the home goalie managed to reach the shot and saved.

After 72 minutes Hartley equalised. A pass from Stow found Steven Duff in the penalty box.

Before the winger could shoot he was hauled down by a defender and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Stow stepped up and scored comfortably.

The Row went out for the winner and forced several corners and long throw set piece situations but without managing an effort on goal.

In the last minute both sides had a chance to win the match. First New rose highest to reach a corner but seen his header cleared off the line.

The home side had one last attack and Blackmore set up Aaron Watson inside the penalty area. The winger's strong shot brought out an excellent save from Jake Maddock.

The result of a hard fought match meant Hartley maintained their 13 point lead at the top of the league.

After the game, joint manager Daniel Brownlie said: "It was a fairly even game, I think Westfield shaded the first half and we were the better in the second.

"Can't help but feel that if we had a few added minutes that we would have found a winner. That being said, they had a glorious chance at the death to win it and our 'keeper Jake Maddock made a terrific save.

"We have to be happy with a point. The match itself was never going to determine any league outcomes at this early stage, but in the same manner it keeps us rolling on."

On Tuesday night, Hartley travelled to Raynes Park Vale for a Challenge Cup round three tie.

Talking ahead to the game Brownlie said: " We've got a couple of injury concerns, our skipper Sam Argent may have to be rested so that he can fully recover from an injury he picked up last week.

"Shane Hollamby also picked up a knock at the weekend. It goes without saying that we still go in strong to our midweek cup game, one that we're looking forward to."
