BRETT Denham scored five goals in two games over the Easter weekend as Tadley Calleva took a big step towards winning promotion from Wessex League Division One.

Big wins over Pewsey Vale and Fleet Spurs have left Tadley second in the table, five points clear of third-placed Cowes Sports, with just two games left to play.

Against Pewsey Vale on Saturday, Ashley Ledger opened the scoring for Tadley after just three minutes. The hosts soon levelled and while Ben Wickens restored Calleva’s lead, Pewsey Vale were able to find a second equaliser.

Denham scored either side of the break to put Tadley in control, with Adam Alliston making it 5-2 late on.

Denham was in top form again on Monday, hitting a hat-trick to take his personal tally to 43 goals for the season as Tadley completed the perfect Easter weekend with a 4-1 win over visiting Fleet Spurs, the scoring being completed by an own-goal.

Tadley are without a game this weekend, so Cowes will play their game in hand.

However, even if the Isle of Wight side win, Tadley’s promotion fate will remain in their own hands, while they still have an outside chance of winning the title, though they trail leaders Team Solent by four points.
