WHITCHURCH United slipped to fifth in the Wessex League Premier Division table after losing 2-0 to mid-table Hamworthy United on Saturday.

The Jam Boys made the trip to Dorset without centre-back Adam Pearson, who has joined Southern League side Bashley, so new signings Taurean Maunders, who has joined from Sholing, and Matt Austin, who is from Hamble Club, formed the central defensive partnership.

The hosts went ahead after just seven minutes, Josh Rose beating a static defence to stab the ball home from close range, but neither side was able to find the net again in the first half.

Hamworthy did double their lead after the break though, substitute Callum Charlton scoring with his first touch.

Rudi Plummer headed just wide as Whitchurch looked to respond. The visitors were then harshly denied a goal when home goalkeeper Jason Collins allowed a free-kick to slip through his grasp and into the net, Josh Harfield being penalised for a foul.

Whitchurch face a really tough game tonight, travelling to league leaders Petersfield United.

Tadley Calleva's trip to US Portsmouth in Division One was postponed. Tadley are without a game at the weekend, but they host Hungerford Town in the Basingstoke Senior Cup on Tuesday night.
