WHITCHURCH United were able to end 2014 on a high, beating visiting Alresford Town 2-1 in their final game of the year.

Both goalkeepers had to be in good form early on, with chances at either end. However, Whitchurch grabbed the lead just before half-time, Rudi Plummer intercepting a pass and playing Danny Phillips through to beat the visiting goalkeeper at the second attempt.

Alresford levelled soon after the break but Whitchurch were handed a golden chance to go back in front when Jamie Mansell was adjudged to have been held in the area. The referee pointed to the penalty spot, but Phillips was unable to convert from 12 yards, his shot being saved.

However, the striker made up for his penalty miss with 15 minutes to play, heading home Jack McCarthy’s centre for his 17th goal of the season to win the game for the hosts.

The victory leaves Whitchurch third in the Wessex League Premier Division, but they are without a game until the new year.
