WHITCHURCH United booked their place in the third round of the Hampshire Senior Cup after they won at Andover Town 4-2..

However it was a tale of two halves as neither team could break the deadlock before half-time, with all six goals coming after the interval.

Whitchurch did find the net in the first half however when a Josh Green free-kick was bundled into the net by Jack McCarthy, only for the referee to rule it out and book the striker for handball.

After the break the quick tempo continued and it took just ten minutes for Whitchurch to take the lead when Jack Garner beat the offside trap and smashed the ball low towards Jake Wellesley-Davies who could only push it under him and into the goal.

Town heads dropped and Whitchurch capitalised in the 68th minute when Dan Phillips held the ball up just outside the six yard box to tee-up McCarthy who drove it into the bottom corner to make it 2-0.

Andover tried to get back into the game by bringing on Nic Turpin and the move paid off soon after in the 80th minute when his powerful free-kick struck the wall and nestled into the bottom left.

Andover pushed for an equaliser but United’s Jamie Mansell sunk their hopes four minutes later with a spectacular solo effort.

Mansell took the ball down onto his chest before cutting inside from the right and curling the ball perfectly into the top corner to give Whitchurch a 3-1 lead.

However Andover’s Cameron Hough then staked his claim for goal of the match when he picked up the ball on the half way line and drove past two defenders before unleashing a rifled shot into the top corner from 25 yards.

With the game still in the balance at 3-2 it looked as if Andover could sneak a late equaliser but a bad mistake from Andover’s defence left McCarthy with a one-on-one which he calmly converted for his second of the match.
