READING  lost their unbeaten start to the season as they were beaten 2-0 at Wolves.

Jaap Stam's side again dominated possession, but they fell victim to goals from Matt Doherty and Joe Mason either side of half-time.

Royals restored Ali Al Habsi, Paul McShane, Jordan Obita and Garath McCleary to the side which cruised past Plymouth Argyle in the EFL Cup on Tuesday, but it was Wolves who nearly took the lead early on when Joao Teixeira set up Mason, only for Al Habsi to deny him.

Wolves centre back Danny Batth was booked shortly after, while Jón Dadi Bödvarsson then pulled his shot wide of the left-hand post from six yards out for the home side.

Teizeira, Conor Coady and Batth all had efforts before the half-hour mark, while Yann Kermorgant had the first chance of note for Royals.

Lee Evans was the next home player to fire wide, while George Saville forced Al Habsi into a save before Doherty gave his side the lead on 42 minutes, firing home from the middle of the box.

John Swift had a free-kick blocked shortly before the break, but Wolves double their advantage two minutes after half-time when Mason headed home a Saville corner.

George Evans, McCleary and Roy Beerens all had shots on goal as the visitors tried to rally, while substitute Yakou Meite missed with a header almost immediately after replacing Beerens.

Mason almost made it three, only to be denied by Al Habsi, but despite Danny Williams and Meite having further efforts, Royals could not break down a stubborn and well-organised Wolves side.

Reading travel to Newcastle United on Wednesday (7.45pm).
