RETURNING Reading boss Brian McDermott started with the win as the Royals beat Blackburn Rovers 1-0 in the Championship.
Danny Williams with a stunning half volley from the edg of the area which flew into the top corner was the only goal of the game.
Fodie Koita was denied an equaliser late on by home goalkeeper Jonathan Bond.
The results moves Reading up to 11th and they are only four away from the play-offs.
The Royals are away at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Boxing Day (5.15pm).
