The home side’s Chris Noone twice forced saves from Reading goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi, before David Marshall denied Nick Blackman.
Cardiff opened the scoring after 41minutes, when Kenwyne Jones headed in Joe Ralls’ free-kick.
The same player turned provider for the second Cardiff goal as his corner was headed in by Matt Connolly. Aron Gunnarsson nearly scored a third for the Welsh side.
Reading are next in action on November 21 when they face a visit from lowly Bolton (3pm).
